Dear Fellow Parents,
We are truly blessed that our sons are in ACS Primary (ACSP).
There really is something very special about ACS. It’s not merely the terrific leadership or strong academic focus that the school has. It’s not just the many opportunities offered to our boys to engage in sporting and other extra-curricular activities. It’s not purely the fact that there is a strong emphasis on a holistic education anchored in the impartation of strong values, nor is it the fact that there is a strong emphasis on training our sons to be effective in the broader community. There’s something very intangible about travelling through ACS.
By the time your son has completed his years of education at ACS, he would have developed a deep affinity with the school and more often than not, display an unstinting loyalty towards ACS. It is an unexplainable pride that each ACSian has to see ACS, and its alumni, succeed grow from strength to strength. Many of us carry a deep recognition and respect that when ACS was planted as a beacon of truth and light 130 years ago, that this was truly a grand endeavour.
As a parent, we would do well for our sons to appreciate ACS’ storied history and deep tradition – its stories of triumph through difficult periods, its strong sense of mission, its unrelenting focus on education – realising that this will form part of the core memories and values our sons will forever embrace in life. The school does recognise that whilst it provides formal education across both academic and other life skills, it is parents who are our children’s primary caregivers and have the resources to also strengthen the school further. It is therefore important for us to be a constant source of support for the school, recognising that the school is doing all it can, given its available resources, with the aim of providing a truly holistic education to the boys. It is also important for parents to come alongside the school leadership to help create even more positive conditions which will allow our young ACSians to achieve their full potential, and whether in times of difficulty or growth, to rally around the school to support its efforts.
We all have a stake in this.
The ACSP Parent Support Group (PSG) is a key strategic partner of the school and a critical part of its fabric. It is the primary platform through which parents of ACSP boys support the school’s growth and current activities. We help the school in extremely tangible ways, aiming to both create conditions which will allow our boys to achieve their full potential. We organise numerous events through the year ranging from the primary one orientation to the fun fairs, run a very meaningful teaching aide program, conduct reading programs, supplement library activities, organise camps and trips for families to bond with their sons under the school umbrella, and ensure that the school is also covered every single day from a pastoral care perspective. We also intend to embark on a program involving families and the community, as this is a school which is blessed to bless. Not a single school day goes by without a group of parent volunteers being in school and productively helping with some aspect of life at ACSP.
Not all schools in Singapore have such a strong PSG and credit goes to all who have been part of this in the years prior and to all parents who currently volunteer. This is truly a labour of love and one of dedication but one which also brings unspeakable reward and satisfaction. I’ve previously shared
that being able to serve in school is not only a privilege but a unique once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of your son’s primary school journey. He is in primary school only once in his life. Being involved in your son’s school life also benefits him. I’ve previously also shared that studies from Harvard University have shown that there is a direct correlation between a parent’s school involvement and how their sons adapt to what can be a foreign and constantly changing environment. It also allows you to appreciate the environment in which your child spends a significant part of his waking hours and gain a greater appreciation of the government’s desired outcomes of education.
So, we invite you to come alongside us to support the school’s leadership. We’re involved in so many different activities that there will be one which is bound to be of interest to you – just drop us a line!
As parents, our hopes, our hearts, our aims are one with the school. And so therefore it must be, that The Best Is Yet To Be!
